PSYCHIATRY

The Department of Psychiatry, POF Hospital was established in 1973. Dr. Mrs. Sh. Asif was the pioneer of Psychiatry department as she started from scratch. In 1979, Dr Muhammad Azhar joined the Department of Psychiatry. He was appointed as Psychiatrist POF Hospital in 1988 and Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, Wah Medical College on July 1 2004 in addition to his clinical responsibilities. Dr Tabassum Alvi served the department as Assistant Professor of Psychiatry from 23rd January, 2007 to 31st January, 2010. Lt. Col (R) Dr. Ahmad Farjam joined Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences, Wah medical College as assistant professor on 20 April 2009. At present, the department is looked after by two Psychiatrists Dr. Muhammad Fahim Qasim and Dr Fatima Aamir Khan.

HOD PROFILE

Muhammad Fahim Qasim graduated from Khyber Medical College Peshawar in 2003. He completed his fellowship training in Psychiatry from Institute of Psychiatry WHO collaboration unit for Mental Health, Benazir Bhutto Hospital Rawalpindi in July 2012. He received his FCPS in Dec 2012 from College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan. In part he has worked as Asst. Prof of Psychiatry in Mohiddin Islamic Medical College Mir Pur.

Psychiatry department of POF Hospital is a general Psychiatry unit comprising in-patient facility for 20 male & 8 female patients .Indoor capacity for admission of male patients can be extended to 26. Department also provides emergency and liaisons services to the hospital. Special Services in of Child Psychiatry are provided by Dr Fatima Aamir Khan. Various forms of psychological interventions including problem solving counseling, family therapy, stress management and supportive therapies are also carried out in the department. As a protocol, ECT is carried out in the operation theatre under general anesthesia. However in near future this facility would be provided in the department. This department is recognized by PMDC for house job.
